CHAPTER I

NAMES

A.   Expert Point of View

A magazine is a publication media or periodical publication that contains articles from various authors. In addition to publishing articles, magazines are also publications containing short stories, pictures, reviews, illustrations or other features that color the contents of the magazine. Therefore, the magazine is used as a reading information center that is often used as reference material by readers in finding something they want. (Djafar H. Assegaff)

Similar to other print media, magazines appear to contain more knowledge than matters concerning the tastes and feelings of the communicant. This media is not a means to be read at a glance like actual media (Broadcast Media), nor does it require attention at a certain time, this media cannot be immediately put aside like newspapers, magazines can be kept by readers for weeks, months, sometimes years. (Defleur Dennis)

But from the advantages it has, we can take the main weakness of the magazine, namely that the magazine is not published every day like a newspaper which is a source of news (delivering information) every day to everyone. "Magazines are in demand by those who are busy and do not have time to pursue daily newspapers". (Depdikbud 1992)

Magazine is a medium of opinion”. So even in a magazine there are writings about opinions or opinions, someone's views on something which is certainly related to the problems that occur in society. (Edwin Emery dkk 1967)

One of the types of communication tools in the form of a publication that is published regularly once a week, or once a month, regularly. The magazine is published by the contents which, among other articles, the news, the stories that contain the value of literature, fiction and non-fiction, poetry, reviews, criticism, caricature, joke-a joke, a filler (filler), editorial, sometimes advertising. (Komarudin, 1984)

The Printed Page, which means that all the items are printed, which is intended to transmit mass communication. The meaning of magazines such as in the quotation from The Random House Dictionary Of the English Language, is “a magazine that is published periodically  always has cover art and is typical of the magazine contains stories, articles, poems and so on. And sometimes contains photographs and drawings that specifically focus on the facts (the subject of area) such as hobbies, news, or sports”. (Baird, 1980)

B.    Author Point of View

The magazine is a book published that contains articles related to the necessary information for the readers. This issue has the time of publication according to the news article in the field. Magazine as one of the parts of the mass media or mass communication, because by looking at the characteristics of mass communication such as are not of direct (through media technical) is one direction, the magazine has special properties that are not owned by the media communications other is the message that is delivered with a letter of the dead that raises the meaning of audiences and is recorded, it means the magazine can be read at any time, documented, and used as evidence for specific purposes.

A magazine is a publication printed using ink on paper the specific properties of the paper is glossy or shiny. The magazine contains articles containing coverage of journalism, the view about the topic of the actual worth unknown reader. The time of issue of the magazine is divided based on the time of sunrise namely the monthly magazine, the middle of the monthly, weekly and daily.

C.   Personal Point of View

A good magazine is a magazine that has a function or benefit. Every magazine has a different benefit because every magazine has a target of different segmentation. From the perspective of the readers of the magazine, regarded as one of the sources of mass media information news articles, media promotion, where the distribution of talent in the field of writing and also entertainers.

CHAPTER II

       ACCESSORIES MAGAZINE

§  England

The first magazine published in England was a review published by Daniel Defoe in 1704. The shape is between magazines and newspapers, small page sizes, every three times a week. Defoe acts as owner, publisher, editor as well as author. The article covers news, articles, national policy, moral aspects, and others. In 1790, Richard Steele created The Tatler magazine, then along with Joseph Addison, he published The Spectator . The magazine contains political issues, international news, writings containing moral elements, and entertainment news. An editor named Edward Cave was the first to use the term "Magazine" in the military warehouse analogy of various materials, derived from the Arabic name "Magazin".

§  American

The first American magazine was developed in Philadelphia. In 1741 it was Wiliam Bradfort's  American magazine and Ben Franklin’s general magazine and historical chronicle. But the magazine did not last long because too few readers had free time to read, high publishing costs, and expensive distribution system.

During the American Revolution, magazines became very political. Despite the political emphasis many magazines in the 1700s were called miscellanies. Because they bring so diverse content and try to attract small, distant, and diverse reader. After the American Revolution, magazines took some time to succeed economic. As the U.S. postal system improved, transportation methods became reliable, and more people appreciated literature as an important form of knowledge and entertainment as magazines grew into mainstream mass media in the 1800s. Magazines were not charged extra in postal rates until 1879 (Riley, 1993 in Straubhar 2012:59).

In the early 1800s there was a tendency towards "literary miscellanies," such as the Saturday Evening Post and the North American Review, the magazine's editors went from producing European literature to popularizing American writers. Magazines that patent weekly

events, history, politics, art, reviews, travel, short stories, and series “Special miscellanies" focus on specific topics and audiences. In 1922, Reader's Digest magazine was published by Dewitt.

Wallace and Lila, which successfully printed many copies. Sarah Josepha Hale's Ladies Magazine of Boston was the first successful American women's magazine. In 1923, Henry Luce and Briton Hadden started Time magazine, and that success led him to introduce Life, a picture photojournalism magazine in 1936. Life fulfills the public's desire to make world photo reports with photographic images that occur with news analysis quite briefly, creating a visual style of journalism. (Straubhar, 2012:60).

§  Indonesia

In Indonesia the magazine was first published in 1853 in the city of Batavia (now Jakarta) under the title Tijdschrif voor Indische Taal- Lan-den Volkenkunde published by Verbandeligen van het Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschapen (Batavia Arts and Sciences Association) during the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia.Verbandeligen van het Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschapen is a cultural institution established in Batavia in 1778.This magazine if translated into Indonesian has the meaning of freedom and Anthropology of the Dutch East Indies.Tijdschrif van het Bataviaasch Genootschap magazine was published until 1955.

In the year of Indonesia's independence in 1945, a magazine published by Markoem Djojohadisoeparto and initiated by Ki Hajar Dewantara, Pantja Raja magazine in Jakarta. In addition, in October 1945,  Ternate published the weekly magazine Menara Merdeka published by Arnold Monoutu and Dr. Hassan Missouri which contained news from Radio Republik Indonesia. Tadjib Ernadi also published the issue of Djojobojo. Soemanang S.H published the Indonesian Revue magazine aimed at destroying the remaining Dutch power, inflaming the popular resistance against the invaders while forging national unity for the immortality of the nation's independence and the enforcement of people's sovereignty.

Magazines are mass media printed and in contain a variety of articles. Articles contain the opinion of someone who explores certain problems that are actual or controversial in nature to tell (informative) influencing and convincing (persuasive) and entertaining (recreative). In addition, articles published in magazines are not bound by specific news or reports. So that the article can be written by a freelance writer.

Today world civilization has led to the era of globalization 5.0 digital world. Now the mass media is switching digital technology that is increasingly fast and sophisticated, about concerning that mass media marketing, especially magazine print media is quite alarming. Now information is loaded various communication media such as smartphones that are easy and practical to take wherever we go. The switching of information contained in technology raises pros and cons in either society or entrepreneurs. Especially now that the magazine has an E-Magazine platform that certainly makes it easier for us to surf information about fashion, news, and so on.

Articles in magazines can be about politics, economics, culture, technology, sports and so on. Magazine articles are usually divided into three large groups, namely the first group of news (News), Opinion group (views), and advertising group (advertising). ·         E-magazine

The magazine is one of the reading media used by humans to meet the need for information. Along with the development of technology, namely the emergence of the internet, conventional magazines have become less attractive to the public. This makes several conventional magazines try to take advantage of the pace of technology by digitizing them into electronic form in the hope of surviving and maintaining their existing market share.

The electronic magazine is an electronic version of the magazine because it is based on electricity. This magazine no longer uses paper as raw material to write articles, but in the form of digital files that can be accessed through electronic media such as computers, smartphones and other technologies.

The development of electronic magazines initially only took articles from the printed version which were then posted online. The goal is to lure consumers to stay subscribed to the printed version of the magazine. However, nowadays electronic magazines have become more sophisticated and developed so that they can become magazines that have original content and characteristics from each of these magazines.

For publishers, internet-based magazines convey information through cyberspace, which of course must be careful. Editors who have full control over incoming content and ensure that no content is offensive or objectionable to audiences. Especially not to deviate from the information purpose of the magazine it contains.

The display of the electronic magazine is divided into 2, namely the replica edition and the online edition

 Replica Edition

The replica edition is an article that is completely duplicated so that it displays a printed version of the magazine replica in an electronic magazine. It aims to give the impression of reading as if using paper media. This edition is usually in PDF format.

Definition of inner layout its development has been very widespread and merged with the definition of design itself, so that many people say that layout is the same is designing”. Then additionally according to Sukmana (2009:1) “Layout is not limited to laying out the materials or content of a page media. Layout is about how to organize space”. So basically proficiency the designer is the benchmark, the designer must really understand the content material the whole before starting to design. Gordon (2006:16) also suggests that before starting to make a design, it is necessary to determine a good structure with guidelines called grid. Grid as a tool is very important element and become invisible or virtual elements. Even this element became the foundation or frame of reference in the placement of all layout elements. This includes making margins, namely determine the distance between the edges of the media with the space to be placed layout elements.

Before processing the manuscript first understand the information obtained either directly or indirectly. The layout process is to arrange the placement of various elements of composition, such as letters or text, lines, fields, images or images and so on. The main requirement of the layout process is that the general embodiment of a

layout must be by following per under with the prints to be produced. What should be displayed in a layout is:

A.    How to budget magazine ?

Before printing graphics results or products, sheet products, book or magazine products and packaging products must go through the preparation process. The preparation process referred to here includes the initial preparation to the manufacture of printing plates. Things that need attention is the process, design, setting, filmmaking, montage and printing plate making. The activity should not be separated from the attention of an estimator in calculating costs, especially the cost of preparation.

Calculation of setting costs, for example, needs to refer to the price standard that applies in certain units of area, for example 1 cm2 Rp. Thus the cost can be calculated, namely the unit size x the setting cost in a certain unit area. As a consideration to be able to calculate the cost of montage and the cost of making plates, it is necessary to know the cost of each process itself in one sheet or one track in a certain size. Thus the calculation becomes easier and faster.

Example count:

Calculating the cost of the content and leather montage

 - Number of pages of the book                                  = 80 pages ,A5 (14.8 x 21 )

 - Printing press size for the contents                          = 64 x 96 cm

 - Printed machine size for leather                              = 32 x 44 cm

 - Printed leather                                                        = 4 color (full color) 1 face

 - Montage price per Plano                                         = Rp.17,500.00

 - Number of pages in 1 montage for contents           = 64 x 96 = 16 sheets

 - Number of content montages                                  = 80 : 16 = 5 sheets

 - Number of skin montages 4 color                           = 4 sheets

 - Cost of content and skin montage                           = (5  4) x Rp.17,500.00 = Rp.157,500
